Making sure you know these important facts about car insurance can allow you to be more comfortable while driving your car every day.
Underinsured Motorist Protection
Underinsured motorist protection comes into play when the driver whom you got in a crash with is unable to pay for your claim. With this coverage, basic Autoplan from ICBC covers claims of up to $1 million dollars per person if injured in a motor vehicle crash. They will also cover you not only if you own the vehicle, but if you are leasing one too.
However, you can easily increase your Underinsured motorist protection coverage up to 2, 3, 4, or 5 million dollars.
A lot more damage can happen to your car than just a motor vehicle crash. It is important to understand that any comprehensive claims you file will not affect your safe driving discount. Comprehensive covers loss or damage to your vehicle from:
- fire, earthquake, and explosion
- hitting an animal, wild or domestic
- falling or flying objects such as rock or gravel hitting your windshield
- weather such as lightning, windstorm, hail, rising water
Third Party Liability Coverage
In the event that you’re at fault in a crash and another motorist makes a claim against you, Third Party Liability covers up to $200,000 of their injury and vehicle damage. However, liability claims can easily exceed this amount and you could be responsible for the difference. This is when you can add optional Third Party Liability to your policy.
ICBC Basic Autoplan is the coverage that is mandatory in British Columbia. However, in order to make sure that you are fully protected while driving around you can consider these additional coverages.
